A deadly shooting left at least ten people dead, including the suspected shooter, on Tuesday, February 11, 2026, at a secondary school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, about 1,100 kilometers north of Vancouver, Canada. Two additional bodies were discovered in a nearby residence, which authorities say is linked to the incident.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that more than 27 people were injured, including two seriously. Authorities confirmed that the injured are not in life-threatening condition.
“Six additional victims, excluding the suspect, were found dead inside the school. Two victims were airlifted to the hospital due to severe, potentially life-threatening injuries. A third victim died during transport. Approximately 25 others are currently being assessed and triaged at the local medical center for non-life-threatening injuries,” the RCMP said in a statement.
“As part of the ongoing investigation, police have identified a second location, likely connected to the incident, where two more victims were found dead in a residence,” the statement added.
An initial alert had been issued to report an active shooter described “as a woman wearing a dress with brown hair.” RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd confirmed it was the same individual, found dead inside the school with an apparent self-inflicted injury.
“At this stage, we do not know the motive behind this tragedy,” Floyd said.
Schools in Tumbler Ridge have been placed on “preventive lockdown” and will remain closed for a week. Police do not believe there are any other suspects at large or ongoing threats to the public, according to British Columbia’s Minister of Public Safety, Nina Krieger.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his deep sorrow: “I join all Canadians in mourning those whose lives were tragically cut short today and in saluting the courage of first responders.” He has suspended his planned trip to Munich.
French President Emmanuel Macron also reacted: “Horror has struck a school. My thoughts are with the families of the victims, the injured, and the entire educational community. France stands with Canada.”
School shootings remain extremely rare in Canada. Notable past incidents include the Centennial Secondary School shooting (Ontario, 1975), La Loche (Saskatchewan, 2016), and the École Polytechnique massacre in Montreal (1989).
